Manathakkali Thayir Pachadi | Heirlooms Recipe

Manathakkali Thayir Pachadi
Manathakkali or Black night shade has a myriad of health benefits. In general only vathal kulambu is made of this berry, however this recipe is slight unusual but very tasty. In this recipe, Manathakkali is combined with Mor mulaga and mixed with thick yogurt & salt.  This is a simple but definitely healthy and mouthwatering raita.

Manathakkali is a seasonal berry which mostly is available in January season in India. They just taste bland or at time bitter (based on the variety) but they have immense medicinal benefits.  Manathakkali keerai (spinach)  is used to cure mouth and stomach ulcers.
Since the availability is seasonal, the best way to store them is to put in plastic box with a paper on the bottom and refrigerate. It is a must to take them out every day and leave it open in room temperature for 15 – 20 minutes. This helps to maintain for a longer time. If they are closed for a long time in refrigerator they would turn smelly though the taste will be still fine. If stored properly without touching with wet hands, you can save them for 10 – 15 days.
